- W40596232 abstract "This chapter discusses interactive applications of multi-channel cable systems. A cable system, unlike a telecommunications network, has the broadcast feature of linking a single source to multiple outlets. Its TV capacity is high, and it can offer more services than commercial TV broadcasting. In addition, it can provide for dialog between provider and customer. It can also offer localized services. These possibilities were first recognized in the UK in 1974 where a study program was proposed. At that time, UK cable systems were constrained to the relay of broadcast programs. To operate a frequency division multiplex arrangement, there are two alternatives. Firstly, the event can be preceded by a lasting, say 30 minutes, during which orders can be accepted by keypad booking while the subscriber is viewing that channel. The message can be stored in the switching point in a switched- star cable system. If the subscriber is creditworthy the switch will remain operative when the head end computer signals the event start. Second, provision can be made for advance bookings. In this case, the event must have an identification number, and it will be immaterial as to which channel any subscriber is viewing while he places his order." @default.
