- W40688551 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter investigates the potential for a novel technology to harness remote natural gas supplies to provide liquid fuels compatible with the existing transport market while reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the same time. The technology concerned is the Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) process, which is a method of converting natural gas to liquids. Various realizations of the F-T process are examined in the chapter. Then, a “well-to-wheels” analysis of the use of F-T fuels in vehicles is described; this is compared with various other methods of supplying the transport market from a remote supply of natural gas. The F-T process can be modified to incorporate CO 2 removal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; between 17 and 25% of the carbon entering the process could be captured as CO 2 . To calibrate this opportunity, a techno-economic evaluation has been carried out of the conversion of natural gas to high-quality liquid transport fuel using F-T technology with CO2 capture. The results were then used to assess the well-to-wheels emissions of greenhouse gases from this and various others elected road-transport systems. F-T diesel could be accommodated in the existing distribution and vehicle-fuelling infrastructure which would minimize the additional costs involved. As a means of exploiting remote natural gas as a transport fuel, the F-T diesel route with CO 2 capture generates less greenhouse gas emissions than the alternative route where liquefied gas is shipped and compressed gas is supplied to the vehicles." @default.
