- W407759558 abstract "Despite the fact that Tasmania's largest non-English speakingethnic category is that of Dutch immigrants and their descendants, it hasbeen the subject of very little empirical research. This study remediesthis omission by providing an ethnographic account of the adaptation ofDutch immigrants and their descendants in southern Tasmania. Theconcept of 'ethnicity' is also critically examined and its role in the processof immigrant adaptation is analyzed. The emphasis throughout is upon the structural context withinwhich immigrant adaptation takes place by focussing on the relationshipbetween social networks, ethnic organizational development and theprocess of self-identification. Migrant adaptation is a process in which animmigrant selects strategies. Such strategies are constrained both by theskill level of immigrants and their access to resources and opportunitiesin the receiving society. The mobilization of ethnicity is thus seen as asituationally specific adaptive strategy which the immigrant choosesfrom a repertoire of available identity options. Two alternative patterns of adaptation are identified. The first ischaracterized by the development of an 'ethnic' community with a widerange of organizational development and relatively closed socialnetworks leading to the maintenance of ethnic traits. The second patterninvolves the dispersion of migrant individuals within the receivingsociety, resulting in limited ethnic networks and hence a decline in thesalience of ethnicity both in social relationships and as an identityconstruct. The two types of adaptation are the result of an individual's sociallocation in both the society of origin and the receiving society. Factorsconsidered include the level of modernity characterizing these societies,an individual's social location in the society of origin prior to emigrationand upon arrival in the receiving society, mode of migration, skill level, availability of resources and identity options and the structure ofopportunities in the receiving society. Using this approach the recent'ethnic revival' in modern societies can be distinguished as a differentphenomenon from the mobilization of ethnidty among first-generationmigrants.Variations in the nature of ethnic mobilization are explainedthrough an examination, grounded in actual social experiences, of thestructural conditions which lead to the choice of strategies. The study-thus demonstrates the limited explanatory power of ethnicity per se inthe process of immigrant adaptation. The concept of 'ethnicity' is adescriptive term which subsumes a variety of factors and processes. Inorder to develop adequate explanations of ethnic phenomena in modernsociety it is therefore necessary to develop concepts based on distinct andmeasurable processes." @default.
