• W408652489 abstract "OBJECTIVE: aim of this study is to evaluate the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) in migraine (M), chronic migraine (CM) patients and normal subjects. BACKGROUND: migraine is a common disorder. Neurovascular system is considered one of the most important mechanisms involved in its pathogenesis. Vasoconstriction of blood vessels might involve other areas besides brain, including the retina.Few studies have evaluated whether the retina is involved in migraine through the evaluation of RNFLT examined with ocular coherence tomography spectral domain (OCT-SD) with conflicting results. DESIGN/METHODS: we consecutively enrolled M patients, divided into three: M without aura (MoA), with aura (MwA) and CM, diagnosed according to the International Classification of Headache disorder (ICHD-3 beta). A group of healthy, age- and education-matched subjects were selected as control group. Patients and controls underwent a complete ophthalmological examination and were examined with OCT-SD. RNFLT, Ganglion cell Layer (GCL), Foveal Thickness (FT) and Total Macular Volume (TMV) were calculated. RESULTS: fifty-two M patients (17 MoA, 8 MwA and 27 CM) were included in the study. Forty-two healthy subjects were selected as control group. We found in M patients compared with controls a significant reduction of RNFLT (94.3±10.8 vs 99.4 ±7.6; p<0.01), in the nasal (70.3.6±12.1 vs 80.1±10.9 p<0.01) and in the temporal (64.6±10.7 vs 76.6±11.6 p<0.01) quadrants. When compared to healthy subjects, CM showed lower RNFLT (93.1±9.8 vs 99.4±7.6 p<0.05), TMV (9.9±0.6 vs 10.3±0.3 p<0.001) and GCL (80.4±7.9 vs 86.9±2.9 p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: our data suggest the involvement of retina in M, especially in the CM. Although migraine is an episodic and recurrent disease, its chronic nature might cause permanent structural abnormalities involving not only the brain, but also the retina.
