- W41049630 abstract "T HE SCHEDULING literature has devoted substantial attention to algorithms for sequencing a given finite group of independent tasks with known service times on a single processor so as to minimize the sum of the delay costs they incur (Dempster et al. [1982], Elmaghraby [1968], Gittens and Nash [1977], Graves [1981], Held and Karp [1962], Lawler and Sivazlian [1978], McNaughton [1959], Monma and Sidney [1979], Moore [1968], Rinnooy Kan et al. [1973], Roglin [1981], Rothkopf [1964,1966], Schild and Fredman [1962], Smith [1956], and Townsend [1978]). In general, this is a complex combinatorial optimization problem. However, there are two simple optimal sequencing rules. Smith and McNaughton showed that if the delay cost function is linear (i.e., if the cost of delaying a task is proportional to the length of the delay), then it is optimal to sequence the tasks in decreasing order of the delay cost rate (i.e., the constant of proportionality) divided by the service time. Rothkopf obtained a simple priority sequencing rule for sequencing with exponential delay cost functions that can be interpreted as discounted linear costs. These sequencing rules are simple because it is possible to compute a single priority index for each task, using only its own characteristics, and then obtain an optimal sequence by ranking the tasks in terms of this index. Such a priority index can exist only when the optimal sequence for any pair of tasks is independent of other tasks that are" @default.
