- W41073485 abstract "Political economy was popularised for two distinct purposes. The first is exemplified by the work of that body of writers that chose to simplify the subject’s “laws” for the student and the educated layman, in the interest of advancing the “science”. The second objective, with which this paper is chiefly concerned, was the control of working class behaviour through dissemination of certain selected aspects of the subject. Writers in this area sought to expound political economy as a series of unchangeable laws, disobedience of which brooked disaster for the working man. But the working man persisted in behaving in ways that flouted these supposedly immutable concepts, and over time much of the teaching was exposed as fallacious. With the theories overturned, the process of feedback forced first the theorists, then the popularisers, to modify their positions. By 1880 the second objective had been abandoned — while the first flourishes to this day.KeywordsPolitical EconomyTrade UnionSocial EconomyClassical EconomistPolitical EconThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
