- W411024846 abstract "In 2010 the Dax Centre received funding from a private philanthropictrust to develop a classroom-based model that teachers could use toenhance the emotional literacy of primary school children using visualart as a medium. This initiative has become known as ‘EnhancingEmotional Literacy through Visual Arts’ (ELVA).What is ELVA?ELVA is designed to address an important need: helping schools andteachers to support the development of student emotional literacy. There are many programs that focus on social and emotional well-being;few however explicitly link the role ofvisualarts in facilitating emotionalawareness, connectionand resilience. Another important distinguishingfeature of ELVA is that it adopts an experiential rather than competencyor skills-based approach. The initiative was initially trialled in four schools, with positive resultsreported. In mid-2011, eight new pilot schools were recruited. Sevenfull-day training sessions were delivered over an 18 month period andclassroom units of work delivered to approximately 2000 students intotal. A second round of pilot schools commenced this year. The Dax Centre commissioned the Centre for Program Evaluation at theUniversity of Melbourne to undertake an independent evaluation ofELVA. This publication summarises key findings regarding design, implementation, and initial outcomes.Findings in briefxTeachers expressed high levels of overall satisfaction with ELVAand professional learning opportunities, including the quality offacilitators and follow-up support. Levels of attendance attrainingsessionswere high.xELVA incorporates several critical features that are consistentwith what is known about best practice in teacherprofessionallearning. These include: (a) sufficient duration; (b) theory-practice mix; (c) active, experiential learning; (d) collectiveparticipation; and (e) ongoing support and materials.xA range of factors affecting implementation were identified, including characteristics of the teacher-participants, facilitators, features of the training, and school context. In most casesschools were able to overcome obstacles, and found the approacheasy toimplement in the classroom.xA 6-month follow-up survey found thatteachers have changedclassroom practice as a result of participating in the training. Thisis an important finding–research suggests that many teacher6professional learninginitiativesrely on a ‘train and hope’ model.ELVA supports training transfer.xAlthough provisional, there is also information to suggest thatpositive impacts on students, parents and the broader schoolcommunity are beginning to occur across school sites. This issignificant for just one year of involvement.Summing upOn the basis of these findings, the Centre for Program Evaluationrecommends that ELVA is continued beyond the pilot phase. To enhancequality, consistency, and sustainabilitya number of suggested areas forimprovement have been identified, and these relate chiefly to securingalternative funding sources.Ongoing monitoring and evaluation isalsoessentialso thatbetterevidence oflonger-term impacts on studentscanbeobtained." @default.
