- W411811145 abstract "This paper adds to the existing literature on wage bargaining institutions by providing an oversight of the main institutional characteristics affecting wage formation over the last decade in developed countries. The information in this paper is based on an ad hoc questionnaire answered by national experts from central banks of each of the countries concerned. Our data provide information on 1995 en 2006 and cover the US, Japan and 22 countries of the European Union. An important value added of our paper in relation to the existing information in the literature is the consistent coverage of all these countries for two common points in time. Moreover, our data contain information on the role of government in the determination of wages in general and on the importance of wage indexation in particular. In our data we find little sectoral and time variation of institutions, although there is some tendency towards decentralisation through opt-out clauses and additional firm-level agreements. Most countries negotiate wages on several levels, the sector level still being the most dominant with also an important role for the firm level. Some form of indexation applies to the wages of a significant fraction of the workforce in many countries. [To be completed]" @default.
