- W41320400 abstract "Mass spectra in combination with FT-IR spectra has been used for supramolecular structural studies of quaternary ammonium surfactants of the following formula: Open image in new window The Fab spectra of positive ions show that the parent ion, [M]+ , Open image in new window is the most important fragment in the mass spectra. As the length of the aliphatic chain increases, positive ions with following positive ions: $${left[ {{{text{M}}_{text{2}}}{text{Br}}} right]^ + }{left[ {{{text{M}}_3}{text{B}}{{text{r}}_2}} right]^ + }{left[ {{{text{M}}^4}{text{B}}{{text{r}}_{text{3}}}} right]^ + }$$is characteristic of the spectra. This observation leads to the conclusion that these quaternary ammonium salts aggregate in the aqueous medium, since the mass spectra have been obtained from solutions which have been evaporated in the vacuum. Moreover, Diffusion Reflectance (DRIFT) Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) of the pure substances, in the form of powder has shown that the characteristic absorption band γCH2 of the -(CH2)- groups is found at 739 cm-1 for n=2 and is shifted to 720 cm-1 for n>5 as expected. In addition, the characteristic absorption bands of CH3 and CH2 are shown in the region of 2700–3000 cm-1 and 1480–1350 cm-1. These peaks are good probes for conformational changes." @default.
