- W4160211 abstract "1891 a young Swedish schoolteacher, Selma Lagerlof, published a novel entitled Gosta Berlings Saga, which received considerable attention in the literary world. In 1934 a Danish baroness, Karen Blixen-Finecke, using the pseudonym Isak Dinesen, published a book called Seven Gothic Tales that soon became an international bestseller. Neither of these books received an initial critical response of a favorable nature, but their authors soon went on to become quite famous. Though this is not immediately apparent, there are some very marked similarities between these two works and their authors. It should be made clear from the outset, however, that these similarities are not due to the influence of one of these writers on the other. It would be difficult to demonstrate that the tales of Isak Dinesen have been influenced by the art of Selma Lagerlof. The similarities between the two writers are due, rather, to a certain inherent affinity, an affinity with respect to their modes of expression, their attitudes toward life, and their personal experiences. Both are, above all, storytellers, whose attitudes towards life and literature have been moulded by the reading of the literature of romance, and the motives for their literary activities must be sought in personal experiences of a related nature. Literary historians have encountered some difficulty in their attempts to determine the place of Isak Dinesen in contemporary literature.1 A comparison between Isak Dinesen and Selma Lagerlof might serve to throw some light on this problem. It might also serve, I believe, to bring the individual uniqueness and originality of each of these two authors into sharper focus. Selma Lagerlof and Isak Dinesen have both written autobiographical works considered by many to be their finest literary products. The former's Mârbacka and the latter's Out of Africa have several significant features in common. They do seem to suggest, first of all, the sources of the motives underlying the literary works of their respective authors. The two books describe a lost paradise, a way of life that will never return. In both instances we find ourselves on a farm on" @default.
