- W4200014955 abstract "Magneto Rheological (MR) fluids are normally made up of spherical iron particles suspended in carrier liquid along with additives in proportion to make reversible changes to its rheological property (viscosity). The literature review revealed that composition proportionate ratio in terms of weight fraction of base fluid, magnetizable particles and additives affects the performance of fluid. In the present study effort is made to develop low cost MR fluid by finding substitute for spherical iron particle as flake shaped iron particles. The characterization study is conducted to investigate the effect of flake shaped iron particles on the overall performance of MR fluid. The optimal composition proportionate ratio is identified for specific application in dampers of automobiles by using statistical technique based on Taguchi’s L9 Orthogonal array. The optimal proportionate ratio in terms of weight (gm) % is identified as 15% Silicon oil (Base fluid), 62.5% of flake shaped iron particles and 2 % Grease as additive. The fluid sample was tested for Sedimentation, Agglomeration, OFF (without magnetic field) and ON (with magnetic field) state Yield stress. The effect of sedimentation and agglomeration reduces in case of flake shaped iron particles. The OFF-state yield stress is found to be 282 Pa and ON state yield stress is 55.2 kPa, which is found to be better as compared to other researchers work. The characterization study clearly indicates that flake shaped iron particles can be a substitute for spherical iron particles for low cost, high performance MR fluid." @default.
