- W4200019627 abstract "Muḥammad Ibn Abī al-Qāsim al-Qandūsī (1861) is the author of a work that remains, as a whole, little known. His name appears in the history books of Islamic art for the originality of his calligraphic style that impressed his contemporaries. Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Kattānī gave him a short notice in his collection of biographies of the Saints of Fez. An extraordinary master, “delighted in God”, his writings show a strong involvement in the life of the artisans of Fez and contacts with the authorities of the royal family. A first text, a short treatise dedicated to the method of prayer on the Prophet, was recently published, allowing us to understand the extraordinary link that linked al-Qandūsī to the Prophetic figure. But the vast majority of his treatises are still in manuscript form today. A first recension of these sources makes it possible to understand that the originality of the style of this calligrapher (he is the author of a monumental Qurʾān in twelve volumes preserved in the Royal Library of Rabat) is determined – according to the author – by his visions of the Prophet. In addition, his treatises – in which he develops a cosmic doctrine of the “Muḥammadan reality” – are accompanied by decorative planks that give a visual dimension to the prophetic presence. His pages are also rich in metaphors that elevate calligraphy from the art of writing to the rank of initiatory path and spiritual realization. Al-Qandūsī played an important role in the history of Moroccan calligraphy as he renewed the local Maghribī writing at the dawn of the introduction of printing from 1864. His calligraphic style, composed of gigantic letters excessively thick, could almost pass for paintings. The method and also the writing resonate in his doctrine, especially in certain specific parts of his treatise Taʾsīs fī masāwī al-dunya wa mahāwī Iblīs (“Establishing the foundations for the infamies of the world here below and the abysses of Satan”). And in several marginal glosses added to the margins of his compositions, in which he explains that his writing is a means by which he seeks to establish contact with the Prophet. This chapter will focus on two major artistic productions of the calligrapher: the Muṣḥaf al-Qandūsī, a luxurious twelve-volume Qurʾān commissioned by a Moroccan minister, and a copy of the Dalāʾil al-Khayrāt, a prayer book from al-Jazūlī (d. 1465), which he probably completed for himself as an act of devotion." @default.
