- W4200032291 abstract "“Mishnah” usually refers to the earliest canonical collection of Rabbinic traditions. Jewish tradition attributes the collection, redaction, and publication of this text to the late‐second‐century Palestinian figure Rabbi Yehudah Ha‐Nasi. Rabbinic Jews revere this collection and have transmitted it to the present day faithfully, though with some accretions and changes. The two Talmuds present themselves as commentaries upon the Mishnah, showing its importance in the development of Rabbinic Judaism. The document is deeply influenced by the late‐first‐/early‐second‐century sage Rabbi Aqiva and his students. However, we commonly find traditions in the Mishnah claiming their origins in the first century or even earlier. The Rabbinic tradition divides the Mishnah into six “orders.” Their sequence is generally: Zeraim (“seeds” – agricultural commandments); Mo'ed (“appointed times” – festival commandments); Nashim (“women” – family law); Neziqin (“damages” – civil and criminal law); Qodashim (“holy things” – sacrificial commandments); and Tohorot (“purities” – purity regulations). Each “order” is then subdivided into smaller units known as “tractates.” Though the Mishnah is in many ways the basis for all the subsequent versions of Rabbinic Judaism, it views the post‐Temple Judaism of its time as lacking an important element and seems to assume that the Jews will someday regain religious and political autonomy and rebuild their Temple." @default.
