- W4200076592 abstract "To determine if, based on results from international studies, pre-eclampsia is a significant risk factor for postpartum depression in the US. Also, to examine health and demographic variables and their association with postpartum depression to assist in determining additive impact. This is a retrospective case-control study created to analyze preexisting data collected by the Community Child Health Network, a dataset in the NIH Data and Specimen Hub database. The dataset includes chart reviews and interviews of 3,079 mothers during the prenatal, perinatal, and multiple postpartum periods around the country. Variables identified as possible risk factors were the diagnosis of pre-eclampsia, maternal age, ethnicity, race, education, income level, insurance, tobacco use, gravida, parity, abortions, number of fetuses, presence of infection or illness in pregnancy, delivery method, complication indicating delivery, and NICU admission. Outcomes were defined as early (2-16 wks) and late (24-65 wks) postpartum depression with an Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale score of 10 or more in each time period. Logistic regression analysis was done to form models for Early and Late postpartum depression and identify odds ratios for each study variable. Of the 3079 original patients, 1216 met study criteria. Pre-Eclampsia was not a significant predictor of early (OR=1.008, 95% CI: 0.43-2.362) or late (OR=0.971, 95% CI: 0.468-2.015) postpartum depression. Number of Preterm births was associated with early postpartum depression (OR=1.485, 95% CI: 1.02-2.163). Smoking (OR=1.603, 95% CI: 1.022, 2.515) and Medicaid for insurance (OR=1.802, 95% CI: 1.108, 2.931) were associated with late postpartum depression. A change in the definition of pre-eclampsia over time could explain why we could not demonstrate the association between this and postpartum depression seen in other studies. Logistic regression models estimating the additive impact of our study variables on early and late postpartum depression were created, though not statistically strong.View Large Image Figure ViewerDownload Hi-res image Download (PPT)" @default.
