- W4200106301 abstract "Aflatoxins occur on wild Prosopis pods in Arizona, perhaps due to summer rainfall that permitted the Aspergillus to propagate. Peruvian Prosopis flour had 25 ppb aflatoxin which is over the FDA 20 ppb limit. Bacillus cereus that can produce diarrhea and vomiting toxins, resulted in an FDA recall of Peruvian Prosopis flour. The Indian meal moth ( Plodia interpunctella ) infects household flour as well as Prosopis flour and is unsightly but not a health hazard. The Bruchid seed weevil ( Algarobius prosopis ) burrows into Prosopis pods, consuming the seeds. Spores of the Aspergillus fungus and Bacillus cereus can propagate in bruchid intestinal tracts increasing toxin concentrations. Bruchid insects can be killed by aluminum phosphide fumigants or by temperatures greater than 52 °C for more than an hour. Irradiation of Prosopis flour with 6 kGy gamma rays reduced the population of Bacillus from 3.4 to 5.4 log CFU/g to non-detectable levels. An FDA petition to use gamma irradiation at 6 kGy is awaiting results on the effect of irradiation on soluble and non-soluble fibers in Prosopis flour. A 28-s treatment of the flour with intense pulsed light combined with TiO 2 beads reduced the Bacillus population by 1.69 log CFU/g. A dry heat treatment of 55 min at 100 °C or 27 min at 110 °C reduced B. cereus spores by 90%. Combinations of techniques may be useful in decreasing frequently unpermitted, B. cereus populations in the 10,000–90,000 CFU/g range, to less than the permitted level 10,000 CFU/g for non-ready-to-eat food." @default.
