- W4200133925 abstract "Section 3.1The topic of this section is plasma density irregularities in the high-latitude F-region ionosphere. In this section we focus on plasma density irregularities at scale lengths of λ > 10 km, which are typically referred as “large-scale” irregularities. But they actually include mesoscale and small-scale density structures usually defined in the magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere (M-I-T) system (see Section 1.2). We will examine two categories of irregularities: plasma density enhancements and depletions, discuss how they contribute to space weather, and their role in cross-scale coupling in the M-I-T system.Section 3.2In this part of the chapter, we discuss the state-of-the-art models to investigate different ionospheric fluid instabilities in the F region and their effect on satellite navigation signals. We also elucidate the linear and nonlinear evolution of some of the typical instabilities with examples and their observational signatures. We discuss remote sensing of the instabilities to simulate observable effects on the ground. Finally, we leave the reader with potential topics of research in this fairly old, yet vastly unresolved area of research.Section 3.3The midlatitude ionosphere, as an interface between low- and high-latitude processes, is a region that exhibits far more dynamics than might be otherwise anticipated. One example is the presence of substantial electron density gradients. These include SED and the main ionospheric trough. These structures are characteristic storm-time features which are developed in the mid- and subauroral ionosphere as an integrate component of the geospace systems and affect high-latitude ionospheric structures such as the tongue of ionization (TOI) and polar cap patches via dynamic transport, and possibly contribute to magnetospheric processes through ion upflow and outflow." @default.
