- W4200162502 abstract "Mesembryanthemum tortuosum L. is endemic to the karroid areas of the Western and Northern Cape provinces of South Africa. It is a decumbent or a scrambling perennial sub-shrub, bearing flowers that are more or less sessile and 2–3 cm in diameter, with colours ranging from white to pale yellow, pale salmon or pale pink. The plant has a rich ethnobotanical history and has been used by local inhabitants for centuries, in the form of extracts, through mastication and by smoking. Mesembryanthemum tortuosum has generated commercial interest, both locally and abroad, and many products in various formulations are marketed as supplements for general wellness, or are prescribed for the treatment of central nervous system-related disorders. Mesembrine-type alkaloids produced by this species are responsible for the pharmacological activities. Following acid–base extraction of six samples, the alkaloid-rich extracts were profiled, together with four typical Mesembryanthemum alkaloids; mesembrine, mesembrenol, mesembranol and mesembrenone. High-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC), followed by derivatising the HPTLC plate with Dragendorff reagent, adequately revealed the alkaloids in the various extracts. In addition, using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and photodiode array detection (UPLC-MS-PDA), a characteristic profile showing the presence of all four alkaloids was established. It has been reported that alkaloid variation in Mesembryanthemum is rampant. The methods described herein may be of value to standardise extracts and commercial formulations." @default.
