Graphene oxide (GO) and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by Hummer’s method and hydrothermal method respectively where, ferric chloride is used as an iron precursor. Fe3O4-GO was added to the chitosan solution at the incipience of polymerization and glutaraldehyde (crosslinking agent) was added to synthesize Fe3O4-GO/Ch beads. The composition, morphology and other physicochemical properties of the Fe3O4-GO/Ch beads were examined using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The adsorption capacity of Fe3O4-GO/Ch beads toward Pb(II) was 187 mg/g and the experimental data was fitted in Langmuir isotherm model. The plausible mechanism of Pb(II) adsorption on Fe3O4-GO/Ch beads was also discussed at pH 6.0. Insignificant effect of the commonly present interfering metal ions was observed on Pb(II) adsorption. The Fe3O4-GO/Ch beads were easily re-used after acid treatment and were employed in four adsorption–desorption cycles. Hence prepared Fe3O4-GO/Ch beads may be utilized as an efficient adsorbent for removing Pb(II) ions in aqueous samples." @default.
