Vision 2030 prioritizes prevention and primary care for an integrated and patient-centered approach and aims to increase the size and performance of the workforce to meet the population’s changing needs and health goals. Shaping the health workforce also represents an opportunity to increase labor market participation of Saudi nationals, and in particular women—another key goal under Vision 2030; the nursing and physician professions in particular are in need of reform. Strategic planning for the future health workforce is key if health and labor market goals are to be achieved in Saudi Arabia. Strategic workforce planning includes the process of analyzing, forecasting, and planning workforce needs, supply, and demand; assessing gaps; and identifying targeted interventions to fulfill the mandate and strategic objectives of the health sector.
