- W4200269604 abstract "This chapter is about the role of foreign aid in achieving the 17 goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with a focus on Sustainable Development Goal 3 (good health and well-being). Using the case study of Australia’s sport for development in the Pacific program in Vanuatu, the chapter discusses sport as an enabler of physical activities and sustainable development. It is argued that (a) foreign aid is crucial for LMICs to achieve sustainable development objectives, including better health systems, (b) sport-for-(sustainable)-development programs are “soft power” tools of the donor countries to enhance their own national interests, and (c) sport, although contributing to more physical activity, is only a marginal policy issue for LMICs like Vanuatu that face enormous poverty challenges. To improve the role of sport and physical activity in poor countries, it is important to identify the power relations and politics of sport-for development programs through a political economy analysis." @default.
