- W4200280496 abstract "Charles Hartshorne (1897–2000) was similar to medieval philosophers in that he developed a philosophy of religion that was theocentric in character. This is despite the fact that he is famous (or infamous) for criticizing the metaphysics of substance found in medieval thinkers. He defended the rationality of theism from the 1920s until his death early in the twenty‐first century. He was almost alone in doing so among philosophers in the English‐speaking world for much of this period. Hartshorne is also well known for being largely responsible for the rediscovery of St. Anselm's ontological argument for the existence of God. It can be argued, however, that his theory regarding the actuality of God (i.e. how God exists) is his greatest contribution to philosophy of religion, rather than his detailed arguments for the existence of God. In classical theism, God is seen as supreme, unchanging being. By way of partial contrast, in Hartshorne's neoclassical, process theism, God is supreme becoming in which there is a factor of continuity that constitutes God's being. God always changes and both words are needed. Many contemporary philosophers and theologians understand God as changing as a result of Hartshorne's philosophy of religion." @default.
