- W4200283605 abstract "In the universe of environmental contaminants, a grouping of chemicals commonly referred to as Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) have recently been subject to intense study of source, fate, and effect on biota in receiving aquatic ecosystems. CECs are poorly defined as a group and usually include chemicals with newly discovered toxicological properties, newly identified biological effects, or novelty in the environment. For the purpose of this review, CECs includes pharmaceutical products and their metabolites, personal care products such as insect repellents and sunscreen, agricultural pesticides, and industrial chemicals including plasticizers, surfactants, flame retardants, and perfluorochemicals. It should be noted that some authors have also grouped polyaromatic hydrocarbons and nanomaterials, among other pollutants, with CECs. CECs have been documented in aquatic environments on all continents and many are considered ubiquitous in anthropogenically altered environments. Among notable sources of CECs are treated wastewater effluents from municipal and industrial sources, combined sewer overflows, and runoff from urban and agricultural lands. Assessing the impact of CECs on water quality has been hampered by the sheer number of compounds and metabolites to be considered, the dearth of sufficiently sensitive analytical techniques, and the subtle and, at times, contradictory biological effects attributed to CECs. These challenges have contributed to the accelerated development of new analytical techniques, read-across approaches, the inclusion of machine learning, and advancement in understanding mixture toxicity. These efforts have identified CECs as a worrisome stressor of aquatic environments which may further diminish existing populations of aquatic organisms or may prevent the recovery of populations despite conservation efforts. It is likely, that further advancements in our understanding of the fate and effects of CECs in the coming decades will clarify their interactions with well-known stressors such as historical contamination and climate change to impact water quality and aquatic biota." @default.
