It is believed to have been caused by a massive object that impacted the lunar surface around 3.8 billion years ago and is considered to be one of the youngest and best-preserved impact basins on the lunar surface. The formation mechanism of such multi-ringed structures is controversial. Theories explaining these rings vary due to a lack of information about the subsurface that provides interpretative elements of the multi-ringed impact basin formation. Subsurface information can be retrieved from geophysical inversions of remote sensing gravimetric data, measured by various lunar missions orbiting the Moon. In this study, we complete existing surface gravity studies of Orientale Basin with a 3D subsurface model, estimated by density contrast inversion from gravity measurements acquired by the Japanese lunar orbiter Kaguya (SELENE). We successfully estimated an initial density distribution model, which correlates well with the existing topographic and crustal thickness data. Once confirmed, this subsurface inversion model will help provide constraints on the crustal structure of the Orientale Basin and validate the existing interpretative models reported in the literature.
