- W4200302026 abstract "The short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) region (1000–2500 nm) is suitable for biomedical applications as it offers deep penetration depths and also maintains high resolution. Even though deep imaging modalities—such as X-rays, positron emission tomography, and single-photon emission computed tomography (which use ionizing radiation based on X-rays and g-rays)—are possible for imaging of deep tissues, they pose a high risk to living tissues.1 Besides the availability of visible light sources of wavelengths of 400–700 nm, attenuation of light as a result of strong absorption and scattering from various tissue components allows imaging of superficial tissues alone. On the other hand, the near-infrared (NIR) wavelength region (700–900 nm) is considered to be an optical window for biological imaging as there is reduced scattering by tissues and low absorption of light from endogenous tissue chromophores such as hemoglobin, water, proteins, and lipids. This has led to extensive applications of nanotechnology-based NIR studies in biomedical imaging and diagnostics. In addition, the availability of silicon charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras and low-cost light sources has rendered NIR technology a well-established technique. Despite the advantages and advancements of NIR technology, its limitations still include limited penetration into tissues due to scattering in deep tissues, which remains an obstacle for imaging deep tissues." @default.
