- W4200314747 abstract "Studies in international followership are still relatively few and yet, if leadership is a system of a social exchange and organization between multiple people, it is impossible to account for leadership without followership. For this reason alone, international leadership studies require knowledge of both parts of the phenomenon – leadership and followership. In addition, followership is crucial for understanding social justice issues, it is a unique determinant of group outcomes and especially relevant in a globally connected world. In this chapter, I analyze published studies in peer-reviewed journals and PhD dissertations (English only) including the 68 journal articles from 29 countries and 19 Ph.D. thesis involving cultural issues and cross-cultural comparisons. Some interesting differences were found across societies, including a Chinese conception of effective followership (Confucian notion of obedience) that opposes the view described by Western scholars. Conducting international followership research has challenges, including insufficient grounded and qualitative work to develop a theory, the adoption of Western tools and instruments, unique translational issues, confusion between leadership and followership identities, a lack of emic-based theory and researcher bias. The chapter concludes with the agenda for followership studies in international contexts." @default.
