- W4200344757 abstract "The esophagus, stomach, small bowel, and colon are sophisticated neuromuscular organs with specialized sphincters innervated via the autonomic and enteric nervous system and are therefore commonly affected in patients with neuromuscular diseases. These pathological processes can potentially affect any portion of the alimentary tract, giving rise to myriad clinical features ranging from dysphagia, early satiety, gastroparesis, constipation, or incontinence. Feeding difficulty with oropharyngeal dysphagia, risk of aspiration, and weight loss requiring feeding tube placement may be indicated in patients with motor neuron disease. Dyspeptic symptoms such as early satiety, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric pain are frequently seen in patients with muscular dystrophy related to poor gastric emptying and gastric stasis. Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction resembles mechanical obstruction, in the absence of any obstructive process, and can be seen in both neuropathic and myopathic diseases; it presents with recurrent nausea, vomiting with abdominal pain, and bowel distension. Constipation is a common complication of neuromuscular diseases and usually treated conservatively. Nutrition plays a critical role in the prognosis of these patients. Nutrition consultation and support using various supplemental formulations and placement of feeding tube are paramount in the management of these patients. In brief, these gastrointestinal (GI) complications have long-lasting implications on the natural course of neuromuscular diseases. Treatment of these GI complications has its own challenges given the scarcity of published research among the cohort of patients with neuromuscular disorders. However, timely diagnosis and interventions can make a positive difference in the management and outcome of these patients." @default.
