- W4200410945 abstract "India has a long history of press freedom and institutions of self-regulation. Yet established systems of media accountability remain weak due to an interfering state and growing media-politics and business ties. Both lead to regulatory lapses, including the absence of regulation to address issues such as that of cross-media ownership. Independently constituted media accountability systems also remain vulnerable to political and other external interest groups, due to structural weakness. Despite the lack of impact of the traditional systems, there is growing awareness on the necessity of self-regulation in Indian media. Journalistic codes of ethics introduced by media organizations or private associations of print or electronic media have been effective, especially on digital news platforms. Digital news portals and social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, have created new opportunities of media monitoring and ethics." @default.
