- W4200413225 abstract "This essay examines the career of Austrian-born Jewish stage and screen actress Elisabeth Ettel aka Elisabeth Bergner (1897–1986) as a series of disguises and “disappearances.” Building on Juliet Dusinberre’s assertion that Bergner’s 1936 film performance as Rosalind in As You Like It reflects “the contemporary world of refuges and exiles” of the time, I argue that Bergner played roles in both her personal and professional life that can be linked with the words most commonly associated with the word “immigrant” in Shakespeare’s corpus, including “alien,” “foreigner,” “stranger,” and “the other.” After looking at her upbringing, the chapter focusses on Bergner’s celluloid escapes in German films. It then turns to her biographical escape from Nazi Germany and her absent presence in the version of As You Like It, where Czinner shot her close-ups during the day, and permitted Oliver’s responses to be shot at night after she had left the studio. In all of these cases, her ambivalent persona allowed her to avoid any simple categorization of “alien”. By the end of her career the same new media that promoted her vanishing during the Weimer Republic films worked to promote her international visibility, specifically when her image was shown on Israeli movie screens in the post-war era, a discernible presence highlighted by her multiple personal visits and lectures she made to the new Jewish state." @default.
