- W4200415730 abstract "Until the late nineteenth century, philosophy in America was largely the occupation of divines; from Jonathan Edwards to Ralph Waldo Emerson, philosophy and religion were inseparable. Josiah Royce's (1855–1916) philosophical commitments may be understood as an extension and critique of this long tradition in American thought. For Royce, the religious enthusiasms of his predecessors were too individualistic, systematically unsound, and lacking in moral rigor. The rise of the professional class of philosophers in the academy coincided with Josiah Royce's arrival at Harvard in 1882, where he taught until his death. His wide‐ranging interests reveal Royce to be a helpful resource for thinking about the foundations of religious insight and belief, the individual as inherently relational, and the importance of community for human and humane life." @default.
