- W4200435384 abstract "AbstractThis paper focuses on the special form of subjectivity in Hegel’s Doctrine of Essence, the second part of the Science of Logic. What especially distinguishes the discussion in this part, is the fact that all determinations of being are reformulated for the first time from the meta-perspective of the structure of subjectivity, meaning that these differences (or determinations) now undergo an additional re-interpretation through the form of selfhood, in relation to which these differences are understood. Hence, Hegel‘s fundamental idea introduced (but not explained) in the Phenomenology receives an adequate treatment for the first time only in the Doctrine of Essence, with its associated grammar of determinability: accomplishing the justification of the “substance as subject” from a logical point of view. The first part of the paper shows that the character of the structural subjectivity is grasped through understanding the overall logical picture of reality as a process of “self-realization” of the substance of the real. “Self-realization” does not entail a constructivism with respect to reality according to the dictates of either an absolute or an empirical ego. Such an interpretation would completely ignore Hegel’s fundamental intuitions and degrade his discussion of the subject as an absolute form to the mere activity of an ego. What Hegel means by self-realization of the substance is a real being-in-itself (substance) that can only be understood by itself and only in its self-relation, and can only be given as intelligible in this form. Thus, as the second part of the paper shows, on the basis of the determinations of reflection (Reflexionsbestimmungen), the basic conceptual requirement for the category of reality, from the perspective of the “self-realization” of the substance as subject, can be stated as follows: the difference between the external given of the real as substance and the conceptual reconstruction of the intentional contents on the side of the subject is not an ultimate difference between external relata, but is derived from an underlying structure of the ‘real in general’, in which everything that is in-itself always has to be understood in the manner of conceptual self-comprehensibility, i.e. understood by and through itself. The fundamental categorical form of the real, on the argument proposed, must be understood according to the model of structural subjectivity, which then becomes fully developed in the third part of the Logic in the conception of the “idea” as the identity of generality (identity) and particularity (difference), i.e. as ontological and epistemological entanglement of apparently definitive opposites such as those of spirit and world, concept and reality, thinking and being." @default.
