- W4200475306 abstract "Due to toxicity concerns, elevated levels of estrogens in the environment have attracted increasing interest in the development of efficient adsorbents for their removal. In this study, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were biosynthesized using an orange extract for the simultaneous removal of estrone (E1) and 17β-estradiol (β-E2), where the removal efficiencies reached 100%. SEM-EDS and XRD analysis confirmed that Ag NPs with a diameter of 13 nm were successfully biosynthesized. FTIR and XPS confirmed Ag NPs surfaces were coated with organic components which enhanced stability. Quenching and EPR analysis detected the presence of both SO4•– and HO• radicals during oxidation, where SO4•– was the main radical facilitating the oxidative degradation of E1 and β-E2. LC-MS analysis confirmed at least 11 and 9 main degradation products for E1 and β-E2, respectively, where the mechanism for E1 and β-E2 removal involved both adsorption and oxidative degradation. Furthermore, Ag NPs could be successfully reused for four cycles with removal efficiencies of 46.0 and 58.3% for E1 and β-E2, respectively, suggesting that the proposed process could be used to efficiently remove E1 and β-E2 from both municipal wastewater and river water." @default.
