Research addressing thisquestion generally focuses on how individuals’ own beliefs influence intergroup behavior. However, intergroup cooperation may also be influenced by second-order beliefs; here, perceptions about how outgroup members’ religious beliefs influence their intergroup behavior. Despite a well-documented tendency for individuals to form negatively biased intergroup perceptions which in turn drive conflict, preregistered studies document that Muslim Palestinians (Study 1: N = 314) and Jewish Israelis (N = 394) predicted their outgroup would give more money in intergroup contexts when thinking about God. Jewish Israelis (preregistered Study 3: N = 373) predicted that Muslim Palestinians think God prefers them to place greater value on Jewish Israeli lives. By demonstrating that belief is seen to promote intergroup benevolence, even in a conflict setting among different religious groups, results raise the possibility that belief in God may facilitate cooperation rather than conflict." @default.
