Commonly encountered storage options are injection into hydrocarbon reservoirs, injection into methane-bearing coal beds or injection in deep highly permeable saline aquifers. To assure permanent storage, it is critical to monitor for CO2 plume migration and potential leakage during and after injection. Subsurface imaging and monitoring rely predominantly on seismic and electromagnetic (EM) techniques, with both offering different sensitivities to subsurface properties. Seismic methods are sensitive to the solid rock structure, and present little direct sensitivity to fluid properties, while EM methods show sensitivity to fluid properties but have limited, low resolution constraints on rock structure. Here we show how to leverage both seismic and EM methods, by way of seismic to electric conversion in the form of seismoelectric effects. Seismoelectric effects (SEE) are a pore-scale phenomena, relying on the charge separation created by streaming currents generated by pressure gradient due to a propagating seismic wave. In this contribution, we demonstrate the numerical implementation of SEE and we highlight unique signals associated to SEE compared to pure seismic surveys for CO2 monitoring.
