- W4200586315 abstract "Microplastics have become a threat to the environment in recent years, and their adverse effect has a direct impact on both aquatic and terrestrial animals and human beings. This chapter attempts an experimental approach to investigate microplastics in the freshwater environment through a number of collected soil sediments from three different locations of River Ganga (near Patna, Bihar). It also analyzed their physical characteristics such as mass, size, number, type, and color. Density separation and filtration methods were opted for conducting the proposed study. In this method, microplastic extraction from river sediment was enhanced with added salt content and filtration on a self-designed setup was appropriate for complete separation of microplastic from the sediment. The result showed the presence of colored microplastic with more than five different shapes (pellets, filaments, fibers, filaments, and fragments) in the collected samples. Comparatively, a large number of microplastics were found downstream, 250 particles while relatively less but significant, about 144 particles were present in the upstream out of 25 g of the soil sediments. Moreover, statistical analysis observed a significant relationship between the abundance and mass of microplastics in different streams. The t-test and P-value performed in two-tailed hypothesis with significance level, P<.05 using one way Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. Lastly, the amount of microplastic found at different locations observed to be increased with the population density of Patna city, that is, urbanization is a major contributor of microplastic pollution to River Ganga." @default.
