- W4200599284 abstract "Yard waste in and around campuses, such as the Indian Institute of Science, and apartment complexes often burnt with ensuing local air pollution is a good source for compost, as well as bioenergy. Energy generation through anaerobic digestion is an alternative that can generate multiple value-added by-products that need to be assessed. Leaf litter and yard waste comprise nearly 35% of the solid wastes in such places. Yard waste comprises of a mix of leaves from many different plant species. It is important to understand the effect of their composition on anaerobic degradation. In this study, such a mix of leaves in the yard waste was collected from various areas of the campus and tested for its methane potential. It was found that the yard waste had a high extent of lignin at 24% (volatile solids [VS], fallen leaves), and a similar extent of water extractives at 26% (VS). These two parameters show that there is a possibility of methane generation, albeit at a slower rate owing to the presence of lignin. The study also tried to understand the effect of size reduction and inocula concentration on gas production. Approximately 160–250 mL biogas/gVS of biogas was produced for 100 days under biochemical methane potential conditions, with a methane concentration of 40–50%. The important conclusion of this study was that neither the inoculum levels nor the particle sizes play a significant role in the biogas production levels or rates achieved. There is thus no great advantage of segregating leaves or powdering/pulverising them to improve gas production." @default.
