- W4205119562 abstract "The 5thAIAA Propulsion Aerodynamics Workshop (PAW5) was held as part of the virtual Science and Technology Forum on January 9th -10th 2021. The goal of the workshop was to evaluate the current capability of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) on complex flows relevant to the propulsion community. The inlet portion of PAW5 focused on an axisymmetric inlet in pure cross-flow near a ground plane. Although geometrically simple, the axisymmetric inlet provided greater resolution of the ingested flow by rotating with the internal instrumentation to sample the flow at more locations than is possible with a typical instrumentation rake. Eleven participating organizations presented their work on the inlet portion of the workshop including 9 CFD solvers, 13 turbulence models, and 200 solution sets. The simulations covered 3 cross-flow velocities with 4 mesh levels provided by the PAW5 inlet committee in addition to meshes developed by participants. In general, solvers were better able to match the test data at the lowest cross-flow velocity regardless of mesh refinement, turbulence model, or solver, though two-equation turbulence models tended to match the distortion metric better than one-equation models. At higher cross-flows, the internal flow began to separate on the windward side of the inlet. The interactions between the separation and the ingested ground vortex hindered accurate predictions by most of the solvers. Moving the outflow boundary farther downstream improved the comparison for some simulations at the highest cross-flow velocities, but additional studies are still needed to ensure the computational model accurately represents the test configuration." @default.
