- W4205164202 abstract "The inglorious performance of French arms in the wars of the mid-eighteenth century, particularly in the disastrous Seven Years' War, sent shockwaves through French society. By 1781 only men who could prove generations of patrilineal noble descent were admitted to the officer corps. This chapter shows that these measures were designed to enhance the effectiveness of the army by reinforcing the traditional relationship between the nobility and royal military service, a relationship grounded in a certain conception of equality, merit, and distributive justice. A system of affirmative action for disadvantaged members of the military nobility, Old Regime military education was intended to restore within the officer corps the equality of opportunity on which meritocratic competition rested. The creation of the Ecole royale militaire was intended to counteract the ill-effects that inequalities of wealth were having on the cohesion of the nobility and the composition of the officer corps." @default.
