- W4205390291 abstract "This chapter describes how the Cunliffe Committee had crafted a plan for peacetime, for a return to gold after the First World War had finished. John Bradbury fought successfully to see the capital controls steadily liberalized across the two years following the armistice. He did this even as Montagu Norman emerged as a major advocate of increasing those restrictions and delaying the restoration. Bradbury did this even as Norman's influence over, and resistance from, the Bank of England grew. Carefully tracing the shifting terms of debate and policies embraced by these figures reveals the roots of the titanic clash between competing versions of the gold standard that erupted several years later. It also provides additional evidence disconfirming the prediction of social scientific theories about the policy preferences of treasuries and independent central banks." @default.
