- W4205522012 abstract "‘Manny’ was a chubby, introverted pre-adolescent when he came to see me with his mother in my downtown Manhattan office. He was shy and frequently looked away. She did most of the talking, telling me of her husband's departure from the family and how it impacted her son and his younger sister. Manny had been a good student, but his grades had begun to slip; he began to stay mostly to himself and play video games. His mother found it hard to reach him and was beginning to get worried about her son. We agreed that Manny and I would meet, at first in a twice a week psychotherapy, and later in a four time a week analysis. As we worked together over many years, as my patient grew into adolescence and eventually left for college, I developed strong feelings of fondness for this lost boy. At times I was obviously a transferential paternal figure with all its superegoic and ‘paternal’ functions, but more often I was a transferential peer, connecting with my own adolescent self to be-with Manny in the ways he needed a companion to be with him during some troubling revelations about himself, his father, and his family. Over time we discussed issues such as male aggression and sexuality, male passivity, a boy's relation to heterosexual sex and to homosexuality. Much of our discussion about sexuality and sex was graphic and Manny wanted to know about bodies, mine, how it worked now and how it worked when I was his age. There was an intimacy of exchange as peers in discussions of penises and their vicissitudes, which took shape in paternal and peer embodied registers around issues of desire, its frustration, and its pleasures. We also discussed his fondness for psychic retreats, issues of identity, what may make a man leave his family, issues of loneliness, isolation, the power of violent phantasies, ethics, his overweight body and the ways it functioned, and shame. My intent is to write this chapter without psychoanalytic references so as to tell the story of my treatment with Manny as a story, rather than as a case report grounded in the literature. Thus it is an experimental writing project that I am hoping will yield a different report of a treatment, which discusses different factors in the therapeutic relationship and consider different goals." @default.
