- W4205639105 abstract "Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a devastating pattern of prolonged nonmedical opioid use that leads to changes in brain physiology that make it difficult to abstain from opioids and is often chronic and relapsing. People with untreated OUD are at high risk of early death from overdose, infectious diseases, trauma, and suicide. This disorder can produce negative effects on the mental and physical well-being of affected individuals, as well as profound and lasting impacts on their families and community. All medical providers, including otolaryngologists, share the responsibility of identifying the risk factors of nonmedical opioid use. This chapter provides an overview of current treatment options for OUD provided by general practitioners and addiction specialists. Pain management strategies for patients taking medications to treat OUD are also reviewed. It is critical to use a comprehensive approach to combat the current opioid overdose crisis, including a thoughtful approach to balancing responsible treatment of acute and postoperative pain with minimizing the risk of opioid use in the population." @default.
