- W4205655684 abstract "This chapter contains a double analysis of Diyanet’s identity in Turkish socio-religious politics. On the one hand, the chapter explains the secular Kemalists needed to maintain full control over society in post-Ottoman Turkey, therefore the instrumentalization of Diyanet was essential for them. On the other hand, it shows how Diyanet has played significant role in nation-building, national solidarity, and the integrity of the society. These mutual relations make Diyanet an always attractive institution for every ideology in Turkish politics. Nonetheless, this chapter argues that the relations of the Kemalists with Diyanet and religion show periodic differences. It therefore analyses the changing nature of the relationship of Kemalists with Diyanet. The chapter shows that the old attitudes of the 1940s–1950s were subsequently modified and expanded until the opening of İmam Hatip schools. A clear shift occurred within the body, which moved from promoting a strong secularist outlook to promoting the idea of Islam as a rational religion, and to associating Turkishness with Sunni Islam. The chapter also notes that after 1980 military coup, Diyanet, which was also heavily used as an antidote to the communist, leftist, and socialist groups, promoted a Turkish-Islamic synthesis on behalf of the ruling regime. The chapter dwells at length on the fact that Diyanet, which has grown exponentially in terms of its budget and number of personnel, has acted as an indispensable state office for both Kemalists and Islamists. The chapter furthermore observes that two seemingly different groups, the Kemalists and Islamists, supported Diyanet and refused to allow any civil religious group to operate outside it (Diyanet). The limitless privileged position Diyanet has often enjoyed, and whose constitutional identity is protected by the law of Turkish parties, allows it to play a prominent role as a mouthpiece of the ruling regime, and to help shape Turkish identity in accordance with the wishes of the government." @default.
