- W4205656078 abstract "For more than 20 years quantitative ultrasound (QUS) techniques have been developed for bone strength assessment, taking benefit of the propagation of elastic wave which are inherently affected by both material and structural bone propelties However, the complex structure of bone significantly complicates the task of elucidating the interaction mechanisms between ultrasound and bone structure and ultimately the inte~retation of measured parameters. Recently developed simulation methods based on time domain finite differences (TDFD) offer a fertile alternative to inextricable analytic formulations. Like in FEM modeling, efficient TDFD simulations need to be coupled with realistic representations of bone 3D structures (or microstructures) and bone material propelties The capability of mapping microstructure, mineralization and elastic propelties of bone tissue with a scalable resolution from the organ level down to the cellular level is of geat interest for the field. Quantitative synchrotron radiation microcomputed tomogmphy (SR-pCT) and scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) are two candidates with high-resolution capabilities to assess the spatial distribution of relevant tissue propelties in three or two dimensions, respectively [I]. Our objective here is to show the usefulness of computational TDFE methods coupled with 3D real coltical or trabecular bone structures (from computed tomogmphy) or microstructures (from SR-pCT) [2,3]. TDFD simulations of wave propagation have been found of g a t value in giving insight into the interaction mechanisms and properties (nature, pathway) of propagating waves. Numerical simulations already brought answers to the following issues: influence of complex 3-D geometly on QUS measurements, role played by structural anisotropy, sensitivity of QUS parameters to porosity (or bone volume fraction), trabecular microstructure and coltical thichess These studies strongly suppolt TDFD simulation approaches as a powerful tool towards a better understanding of ultrasonic propagation in bone. Nevertheless, TDFD computations were performed on binary structures all having identical spatially uniform mechanical propelties They were therefore restricted to the study of the influence of structural Dammeters and could not account for the influence of tissue mechanical properties. As the next step to the work presented here, we are currently exploring the potential of coupling TDFE to spatial mapping of elastic propelties obtained from SAM measurements." @default.
