- W4205747129 abstract "This chapter describes the foundations, theoretical relevance, and clinical applicability of attachment theory for systemic family therapists (SFTs). In additional to traditional descriptions of child and caregiver relationships, we also focus on research that highlights the utility of attachment theory when considering psychopathology and romantic relationships in adulthood, including how and when attachment security changes over time. In addition, we review traditional and emerging methods for measuring attachment as well as the major clinical models relevant to SFTs that are rooted in attachment theory. Regardless of a therapist's preferred model, we propose that an attachment lens can augment a clinician's understanding of what people want in relationships and how problematic behavior can be understood in terms of ineffective bids for connection, repair, or distance regulation. Finally, we discuss critiques of the theory and cutting-edge needs in clinical and basic research to more fully understand and apply attachment theory to SFT." @default.
