- W4205845123 abstract "AbstractLike later writers, the Anglo-Saxons do not use words by chance. Their choice is governed by the multilingual conditions of their time, most clearly so in their use of loanwords, Latin and Scandinavian. Latin loanwords show varying levels of naturalization. Scandinavian loanwords may be avoided in religious works, but may be used for administrative purposes. The Anglo-Saxons’ view of ethnicity seems less firmly related to the languages spoken by the inhabitants of Britain than to origins. Their linguistic self-awareness differs from that of users of Modem English, and of course it differs from a modem philologist’s linguistic self-awareness." @default.
