- W4205874659 abstract "The unique properties of dendrimers and dendritic polymers make them excellent components of stimuli-responsive nanomedicines. Dendrimers are sub-10-nm nanoparticles with a hyperbranched structure that provide well-ordered functional groups capable of supporting a high density of stimuli-responsive elements and drug molecules. Dendritic structures may be incorporated into larger, micellar structures for even more multifunctional behavior. This chapter covers the chemistry of these polymers, followed by a review of scientific literature describing these polymers in nanomedicine design organized by the desired functionality. Stimuli-responsive nanocarriers with dendrimers or dendritic structures have been designed for improved tumor penetration, efficient cytoplasmic drug release, and enhanced escape from the endosomal-lysosomal pathway. Separately, electromagnetic stimulation may also be used to stimulate drug release at a defined location. Several dendrimer-based nanomedicines are in clinical trials, and these polymer systems are likely to play an important role as the field of stimuli-responsive nanomedicines continues to mature." @default.
