- W4205928036 abstract "The greater effectiveness of densely ionising radiation is accounted for by using a modifying factor, relative biological effectiveness. Radiation damage leading to cell death is referred to as deterministic damage. The body can suffer cell loss without manifestation of that damage. Skin is a common site for deterministic damage to occur. In a similar manner to damage caused by too much exposure to the sun, ionising radiation damage to the skin initially appears as erythema, a slight reddening of the skin at radiation doses in excess of approximately 2Sv. The reproductive organs, testes and ovaries, which undergo relatively rapid cell turnover are sensitive to deterministic effects. Most of the data on deterministic effects is derived from single, acute exposures. Radiation damage leading to cell modification is termed a stochastic effect, sometimes referred to as probabilistic effect. The largest groups of people from whom data on stochastic radiation effects has been gathered are those irradiated as a result of nuclear explosions." @default.
