- W4205940622 abstract "Platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) receptors were studied in postmortem adult human brain and cervical spinal cord using autoradiography with human recombinant 125I-PDGF-BB. PDGF-BB binds to the three different dimers of PDGF receptors (αα, αβ and ββ). PDGF receptors were visualised throughout the central white matter and in all neuronal regions that were examined, with the highest densities in layers I–II and V–VI of the cerebral cortex, the granular layer of the cerebellar cortex, the dentate gyrus and pyramidal layer of the hippocampus, and the substantia gelatinosa of the spinal cord. The widespread distribution of PDGF receptors within diverse neuronal structures suggests a broadly acting neurotrophic/survival or neuromodulatory role of PDGF. The presence of PDGF receptors in the central white matter is consistent with the well recognised trophic function of PDGF on myelinating glial cells. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Because MS patients may be deficient in intrinsic mechanisms responsible for myelin repair we investigated possible changes in PDGF receptor densities in cerebral tissue samples of MS patients. Both in cerebral cortex and normal appearing white matter of the frontal lobe, we found that PDGF receptor densities were not different between MS patients and controls. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd." @default.
