- W4205980147 abstract "With the emergence of wireless capsule endoscopy over the last 10-15 years it has been feasible to observe small bowel mucosa in its entirety for the first time. However, of course, this technology has limitations in terms of the following: biopsy provision; therapeutic capability; and directional control. These shortcomings are largely avoided by enteroscopy in its various forms, and the two technologies are certainly complimentary. The presence of both is probably mandatory for any unit aspiring to provide a complete small bowel investigation and endoscopic treatment service. Over the last few years push enteroscopy and laparoscopic-assisted enteroscopy have been superseded by double balloon enteroscopy, single balloon enteroscopy, and recently spiral enteroscopy. All have their proponents but it is clear from the overall experience and published literature that double balloon enteroscopy offers the deepest small bowel examination possible both trans-orally and trans-anally. Spiral enteroscopy does not allow deep penetration but can be useful for a shorter procedure time and for therapeutic intervention when absolute arrest of the instrument is needed. These technologies have been used in small numbers of children published to date and offer a minimally invasive alternative to laparoscopy or laparotomy especially for polyp syndromes." @default.
