- W4206018043 abstract "Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) with posterior percutaneous stabilization is a desirable surgical approach in the treatment of patients with degenerative conditions of the lower spine but it is associated with increased risk of certain complications including damage to the lumbar sympathetic chain causing changes in temperature and perspiration of an affected limb. These symptoms are generally subjectively reported symptoms that are not commonly assessed using objective measures. A 28-year-old female with a 3-year history of lower back pain refractory to conservative treatment is described. The patient underwent an ALIF with bone allograft, posterior percutaneous stabilization and an L5/S1 unilateral left-sided fusion. After the procedure, the patient noted discoloration, swelling and a feeling of warmth in her left leg relative to the right leg. A smartphone-based infrared camera was used to visualize a temperature difference between her lower extremities. The symptoms were managed conservatively with compression stockings and the subjective improvement in her symptoms was correlated with an improvement in the measured temperature difference using the infrared camera. The use of a smartphone-based infrared camera can help identify and monitor changes in sympathetic function in patients undergoing anterior approach lumbar surgery. This technology is cost-effective and easy to use making it a promising tool to help inform the diagnosis and prognosis a surgeon can offer a patient in the post-operative period. Smartphone-based infrared cameras also offer the opportunity to evaluate sympathetic function more easily and objectively in a variety of neurosurgical settings." @default.
