- W4206182685 abstract "At the turn of the 21st century concerns were raised about the need for new antimicrobials to combat the spread of Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. Silver (and other metallic/metallic oxide) nanoparticles (AgNPs) were proposed due to the unique properties of nanomaterials (surface area, charge, shape). Specifically it was thought that AgNPs would represent a stiff obstacle to bacterial adaptation due to the diversity of bacterial systems impacted. However such thinking did not take into consideration the long history of microbial associations with metals, and the diversity of already existing mechanisms (such as prevention of entry, chemical efflux, alteration of target substrates, persistence), to mediate bacterial adaptation to metallic NPs. The mistaken notion of the power of metallic NPs to combat MDR organisms was also bolstered by experimental designs that did not account for microbial evolution. By the second decade of the 21st century experiments began to emerge that cast serious doubt on the capacity of metallic NPs alone to control MDR bacteria. These experiments have demonstrated not only the relative ease by which bacteria evolve resistance to metallic NPs but also the underlying genomic mechanisms by which this occurs." @default.
